Cold Laser Therapy
at Midwest Sport and Spine

Laser therapy on elbowCold Laser Therapy, also known as Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), is a treatment that utilizes specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissue and is thought to help accelerate the healing process. It can be used on chiropractic patients who suffer from a variety of acute and chronic conditions in order to help eliminate pain, swelling, reduce spasms and increase functionality.

How Does Cold Laser Therapy Work?

These are handheld devices used by the chiropractor and are typically the size of a flashlight. The laser is placed directly over the injured area for 5-15 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated and the dose provided by the cold laser unit.

During this time, the non-thermal photons of light that are emitted from the laser pass through the skins layers (the dermis, epidermis and the subcutaneous tissue or tissue fat under the skin). This light has the ability to penetrate 2 to 5 centimeters below the skin at 90mw and 830 nm.

Once the light energy passes through the layers of skin and reaches the target area, it is absorbed and interacts with the light-sensitive elements in the cell. This process can be compared to photosynthesis in plants – sunlight is absorbed by plants, which is then converted to usable energy so that the plant can grow.

When cells absorb this light energy, it initiates a series of events in the cell that is theorized to eventually result in normalizing damaged or injured tissue, a reduction in pain, inflammation, edema and an overall reduction in healing time by increasing intracellular metabolism.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it painful?

One of the best things about cold laser therapy (aside from the healing benefits), is that you won’t feel any pain during a session-but trust us, it’s working! The laser is designed to penetrate deep into your muscles and cells to promote healing, all while being entirely free of pain. In case you were wondering, the laser itself does not feel cold nor does it produce any heat which allows us to start the healing process immediately after an injury occurs.

How many sessions will I need?

We’ll be sure to give you our recommendations for care and let you know how many sessions we think will benefit you based on your condition. Some patients require just a few before they notice results, while others make it a routine part of their therapy with us. The choice, of course, is always up to you.

What should I wear to my appointments?

We recommend that you wear loose, comfortable or athletic clothing. The laser will be targeted at your specific problem areas, so we may need to adjust what you’re wearing-we’ll always do our best to retain your modesty.

Can I have cold laser done while under chiropractic care?

Absolutely. We have many patients who are under chiropractic care and have cold laser sessions done. In fact, if you’re already a patient with us, you can have your adjustments and cold laser sessions done in the same visit. Often times, the combination of care is the best approach to take with healing, and may even help you heal quicker than with just one or the other.
